Mustang is an arid area with landscape characteristics similar to Tibet which is located in the northern part of the Kali Gandaki valley from Kagbeni upwards. Mustang can be distinguished in two part : one in the south, with five villages inhabited mainly by the Manang ethnic population and one in the north, the ancient kingdom of Lo, in which there are villages of exclusively Tibetan culture, traditions and language. The history of the Mustang is rich and complex, often cloaked in legend. it seems that the Tibetan poet and philosopher Milarepa visited it during his pilgrimages part. Mustang was certainly once part of Ngari, as the western part of Tibet in medieval times it became, together with Dolpo and much of western Nepal, during Malla Empire. Until 1951 the small kingdom maintained a fairly consistent independence, In the 1960s, after China's invasion of Tibet, Mustang was a center of guerrilla operations against Chinese soldiers, starring the Khampas, historic and fear some Tibetan warriors from the Kham area, east of Lhasa. Mustang, which had remained open for many years only to researchers and a small number of special guests (the Italian Tibetologist Giusppe Tucci visited it in the autumn of 1952) was opened to tourism in the spring of 1992. The trek, very fascinating both for its landscape and ethno-cultural aspects, which develops in a typically Tibetan environment, with large arid and rocky spaces, a landscape quite different from the usual Nepalese panorama, richly vegetated even at medium-high altitudes. We can see only in summer with cultivated fields and the villages appear like green oases in the surrounding desert landscape. Monsoon rains are also less consistent than in the rest of Nepal. The buildings of Lo Manthang, the temples and the royal palace built with dry mud bricks and wood are very beautiful to see.
